Web Services - Revisited

I presented on web services and why they "have issues" when it comes to interoperability, security and trust at webDU 2007. Things have changed, Luke Skywalker is now ruling the universe and web services are just fine...ehh, hang on!

  • Difficulty: General
  • Prerequisites: An interest in web services!
  • Session Track: Safe for Managers

Session Detail

Have things really changed? Let's revisit the topic and look into the status of the whole web services movement. Are they still there or have they been replaced by REST APIs in the meantime? Do the big corporates have resolved the interop issues? Are why seem SOAP/WSDL web services purely to be pushed by those corporates while some more agile and innovative players base the web services APIs on JSON, custom XML or WDDX?

This is not going to be a tutorial talk. This is also not going to be a CF/Flash/Flex-talk although we're going to use a few of those technologies to demonstrate common obstacles when dealing with web services two years later than the first release of this talk. The session will be very inspiring for those who want to create loosely coupled architectures by bridging platforms and technologies. It will also look behind the marketing FUD when it comes to "enterprise-level web services" via "REST-platforms in RoR" - after all there's a lot of good and bad in both camps.
