Software Requirements without Tears
- Difficulty: General
- Prerequisites: Aversion to late-night deadline rushes.
Session Detail
Requirements. Love them or hate them... well who are we kidding, who likes writing (or reading, or talking about, or carrying to the recycle bin) requirements documents? And yet, Gartner estimates that 75% of US IT projects fail in some way, largely due to an inadequate understanding of these same requirements.
Imagine for a moment that gathering and documenting requirements was a more meaningful activity, with a clear purpose, a way to tell when you'd finished and truly readable output that helped clients and developers work happily together. How many late nights rushing to deadlines, disputed invoices, scope blow-outs and stressful client stand-offs could you avoid if you had a requirements approach that actually worked?
In this presentation Robin will introduce the concept of Problem Frames, a simple pattern language for recognising and describing software requirements in a useful way. He will also talk about how requirements fit into the initial stages of the software development and sales lifecycle, including estimates, proposals, release cycles, functional and technical specifications. Whether you're working in a large software team or running your own startup, this is a rare opportunity to get practical, expert advice on these critical components of successful software solutions business.
