Apps vs Sites vs Content - a vendor-agnostic view on building stuff for the mobile web

"Mobile is the new black - and that's for a good reason. It's a global phenomenon that more and more people use the web on the mobile device of their choice. This can be pretty much anything from an old Nokia phone, a Blackberry or the rather modern iOS and Android devices.

  • Difficulty: General
  • Session Track: Safe for Managers,Mobile Devices,Experience

Session Detail

Just alone that diversity raises a lot of decisions: Should we build a mobile website with HTML/CSS and JS or do we need/want an ""app""? How can we support multiple platforms and the variety of hardware features such as different screen sizes, GPS, accelerometers, keyboards and more?

This session will cover market realities, technical challenges and possible solutions for those. We will cover the major mobile platforms and their content delivery approaches. I will also talk about development platforms such as iPhone and Android SDKs and web-based solutions such as JQuery mobile, JQTouch or Sencha Touch and try to come up with useful recommendations where to put your time and money for application and content development.
