Code Wars

Are you Developer Enough? Prove it at WebDU Day 0 - CODE WAR!

  • Connections Bar at Crowne Plaza, Darling Harbour from 6pm

Tired of Brisbane claiming that they're the ColdFusion capital of Australia? Think those coffee-sipping Mexican ActionScripters in Toorak need to be cut down to size? Or perhups you'd like to show the "big western island" how it's done?

Well here's your chance to do all the above and be immortalised as the inaugural winner of the Australia New Zealand Code War trophy at WebDU day 0, the 11th of June 2008, in the Connections Bar at Crowne Plaza Darling Harbour from 6pm. Just be one of the first eight teams to register using the contact us form on this site (see end of post for details) and youll secure a spot on the starting grid. If you miss out dont despair, this promises to be a lot of fun for the spectators too bring your friends!
Heres how the competition will work. Eight teams with a minimum of two and maximum of four members each will compete in a series of head-to-head sudden death matches to determine the champion. A supplementary prize will be awarded for best team costume and a wooden spoon will be awarded for the ugliest solution seen during the competition.

Each team is allowed one computer. The match starts with the two teams surrendering their computer to the organisers. The organisers then tell the teams what their task will be. The tasks are designed to be technology neutral (you could use ColdFusion, Flex, AIR, Director, Ruby, .NET or whatever) and take around 15-20 minutes to complete. Tasks could include: " Building a UI for a particular purpose in a fixed time, with the winner decided by audience applause, or " Implementing a simple algorithm (number conversion, sorting, filtering and such) with the first to demonstrate a working version winning. The task instructions will be written out, and any special conditions for winning will be detailed in the instructions. The teams have ten minutes to plan their approaches. No computers, phones etc may be used at this point pencil and paper is acceptable.

The organisers will connect the team computers to two projectors at the front of the room. The team computer has to be run at 1024x768 (or potentially 1280 both teams will have the same resolution) in mirrored mode and hooked up to the projector. Mac people should bring a VGA adaptor just in case. When the competition starts the teams will run from the back of the room to the computers and start coding. No internet connection, USB key or other non-finger-based transfer of data to the competition computer is allowed. Audience members are not allowed to approach the competitors although they can yell suggestions (e.g. PICK THE VBOX!) as much as they like. The competition organisers will also run a commentary through the match which may be distracting, so be prepared!

At the end of the match the teams must stop working at the signal or be disqualified. The commentators will interview the team and the winner will be decided. The judges decision will be final.

The bar hire is courtesy of Adobe Australia thanks guys! There are pool tables, a lounge and a total capacity of 300 so it promises to be a great night. You do not have to be attending WebDU to come along for the fun.

To register your team, please provide us your team name, a list of 2-4 team members, contact phone and email and a short creative description of your team. We will post details of the final team list on the blog.

See you there!
